BTEC First Award in Travel & Tourism
Travel and Tourism is offered to students in Year 10 as part of their option choices. The BTEC First Award in Travel and Tourism is a practical introduction to life and work in the industry. Learners will explore the world of travel and tourism, the importance of travel and tourism to the UK and world economies, travel and tourism destinations in the UK, Europe and worldwide and gain an insight into key areas such tourism development, tourism trends and customer service. Within this programme, learners investigate the UK Travel and Tourism industry in depth and extend their knowledge of the UK as a destination. Learners will explore some of the key areas within the sector, including accommodation, tourism development and promotion, transport and visitor attractions. They will also have the opportunity to explore the importance of the Travel and Tourism sector to the UK, as well as investigate different types of customers and UK destinations. The curriculum gives learners the opportunity to develop key skills, such as research, report drafting and writing/presentation skills, not only embedding the skills that modern businesses desire in employees but also giving learners an academic challenge to overcome. The intent of the course is to provide all our learners with the skills they would need to be successful in the world of Travel and Tourism. The curriculum is balanced in terms of developing knowledge and skills. The curriculum offers an engaging and stimulating introduction to Travel and Tourism, giving learners the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment. The combination of units studied gives the right balance between challenge and engagement but also delivers practical knowledge and skills to ensure learners are prepared for the move to Level 3 at college.
KS4 Curriculum 2020-2021
Year 1
In the first year of the BTEC, learners will cover:
UNIT 1 – The UK Travel & Tourism Sector. This is an externally assessed examination.
UNIT 2 – UK Travel & Tourism Destinations.
Year 2
In the second year of the BTEC, learners will cover:
UNIT 4 – International Travel & Tourism Destinations.
UNIT 3 – The Travel and Tourism Customer Experience.
